Here we go again.
Tony Greene once again inserts himself into the end of a critical game with a horrendous call, calling a charge with 3.2 seconds to go on an Arizona player while Arizona trailed by one.
Arizona got the ball back on an out-of-bounds call and had a final shot for the win, but couldn't get a shot off before the horn sounded, and Arizona lost 64-63.
Although Tony Greene didn't absolutely cost Arizona the game, his absurd call at such a critical time hurt them immeasurably.

As soon as the Wisconsin Arizona game was over, I went to my PC to look up the crew. I was sure (without knowing) that it was the same ref who made the horrendous call in the Syracuse Duke game. And Viola... Tony Effing Greene. Ridiculous charging call at the end on regulation in this game tonight. This guy sucks or he is on the take. What a clown
ReplyDeleteLook what happens when you start Googling Tony Greene...

I didn't see the AZ/Wisconsin game (or the charge call), but maybe Calipari would rather face Wisconsin instead of Arizona when he cheats his way to the Final Four tomorrow vs. Michigan? Perhaps it was Greene with the assist tonight.
DeleteI thought refs were supposed to focus on allowing more freedom of movement this season? Guess Tony Greene didn't get that memo. Horrible call at the end of the a BIG game that killed any momentum that Arizona had.
ReplyDeleteTony Greene is a pathetic joke. No way do you make that call when the defender was not in legal guarding position and was draped all over him. Sorry, Tony Greene needs to be demoted big time for his incompetence.
ReplyDeleteHe also missed Roy Williams calling a timeout right in front of his face. Incompetent or is he on the take??
ReplyDeleteI'm an NC State grad and I admit he RUINED the UNC vs. Iowa State game. He RUINED the game last night. Easiest no call situation I've ever seen, should have ended with Hollis-Jeffersons third tip slam of the game at the buzzer.
ReplyDeleteI think you have to take into account the fact that the out-of-bounds ruling in Arizona's *favor* was stupefyingly inept. In NO WAY was there conclusive evidence to overturn that call, not even remotely close. So that kind of throws off the "he's on the take" theory; I think he's just inept beyond words.
ReplyDeleteBelieving Wisconsin had help doesn't throw the "he's on the take" theory anywhere as he was clearly over ruled by the other two refs on the out of bound play. And, although I am a Wildcat through and through, I blame Arizona for the loss. They had an inferior team down by 8 most of the first half and didn't put them away AND they let a mediocre player such as Kaminsky score 26 or 28 points after he avereaged 11.7 during the season. It was Arizona's loss to accept, but Wisconsin had considerable help from Greene at a crucial time.
DeleteOh, come on. Giving Arizona the ball back after the bizarre call on Johnson was simply a makeup call. The refs knew they were going to take tremendous heat for the way they stole the game from Arizona, and they knew that with a couple of seconds left, Arizona had almost no chance of winning it off the inbounds pass.
DeleteI also did not like the elbows to the head and slaps in the face by the Badgers. Flagrant fouls not called but they can call a push off in the final seconds of the game? They are a very dirty team. Seems Bo Ryan's teams can't win games by playing basketball so they have to cheat.

ReplyDeletePretty sure that isn't legal.
Baseline camera view of the Johnson foul shows he completely cleared away Gasser, it was the right call.
The first half officiating was clearly in Arizona's favor, with 2 phantom travel calls against Wisconsin. They actually know how to use a pivot foot and drop step, refs aren't used to that.
Gasser clearly was not set and initiated the contact BEFORE Johnson cleared him out which is a blocking foul by definition. Greene got it wrong, again. He is an embarassment to college hoops and should be banned.
DeleteOh yeah, let's not forget about the 2 times the ball clearly went off Arizona players earlier in the game, and the ball was given to Arizona (there were replays of this during the game).
ReplyDeleteWisconsin punished Arizona inside with Kaminsky and Hayes, yet they only shot 12 free throws.
ReplyDeleteDon't think they punished Arizona. Check the rebound totals......even. And Gordon had 18. They SURE didn't punish him on the boards. Arizona should have kept their feet on Wisconsin's neck in the second half and they would have won. But......they didn't and they lost. It was their fault, but Greene helped them when it counted.
DeleteGo to 1:37 here and tell me again that's not a foul:

Also, he missed the F'ing shot and Wisconsin had more rebounders in position than Arizona.
Clearly Bo Ryan intimidated the officials. The calls after the T clearly went all Wisc, including what should have been a flagrant elbow to the back of Gorden, yet called a foul on Gorden. I'd rather keep your T and just call a fair game. Horrible call at end. Johnson only protected ball after being ridden to basket, which is the original foul.
ReplyDeleteThe ACC should fire this jerk immediately. He IS on the take and one of the poorest excuses for an official ever to don a zebra suit. The guy is so crooked he can't sleep straight in bed at night.
ReplyDeleteYOU DO NOT....PERIOD> Make that bad of a call at the end of a game. Sure if it was a very obvious foul then call it. But (and I am an AZ fan) it should have been on Wisconsin first. But, it is one that should not have been called at all. This guy is an idiot. Hope he does swollow his whistle. No Heimlich from me for sure.
